Depart from Adventure Inn accompanied by your bilingual naturalist guide. See miles of coffee plantations, the crop that built much of Costa Rica's earliest infrastructure, on both sides of the road as we head over the Central Valley mountains into Braulio Carrillo National Park where steep slopes are covered with thick cloud forest and beautiful waterfalls can be seen from the road. After the park, we stop for a typical Costa Rican breakfast, fresh fruit, coffee, eggs and the popular gallo pinto.
We continue on through the Caribbean lowlands through miles of banana plantations stopping briefly at a plantation by the road for your guide to explain the process of growing, cutting the fruit and carrying it off from the plantations on overhead tracks to processing plants where the bananas are sorted, cleaned, boxed and exported.
We later embark on the most exiting part of this tour: the boat trip into the jungle on the calm Caribbean canals of world famous Tortuguero National Park. Stop to listen for howler monkeys, see crocodiles basking in the sun, or a tame cayman coming up to the boat looking for a snack, colorful exotic birds, untold iguanas, so much rich life around every turn in the canals.
We will enjoy a hearty, typical lunch to please the hungriest of appetites the after we will take a tour the laid-back village of Tortuguero with no cars, no roads, and where you will have a chance to interact with the local people as you walk on the beach and through the paths joining the village.
Finally, we get back in the boat, take it through more canals to the bus, and head back to San José and Adventure Inn, making a rest stop along the way and arriving around 6:30 pm.
