Reaching Irazú Volcano is an experience in itself, driving through busy San Jose, over the pass, down into the ancient capital of Costa Rica called Cartago, then we climb for forty minutes through the sweet smelling onion fields and market garden farms, growing from the very fertile shadow of Irazu Volcano that has powdered the landscape with volcanic ash for millions of years. Passing through small rustic farming villages, you see occasional glimpses of Cartago disappearing far below. Finally we reach the cloud forested Irazú Volcano National Park, a chilly and thin-air 11,000 feet above sea level.
After walking a few hundred meters on the moonscape environment and admiring the two enormous craters with the bubbling turquoise waters and breathtaking views (both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on a clear day), and feed the pestering coatamundis in the parking lot, you'll descend to the historical City of Cartago. Here we will visit the mysterious ruins of the old Parish and view the beautiful Basilica of our "Virgin de los Angeles" with rich displays of carvings, statues and art, and where every Costa Rican is required once in a lifetime to make a pilgrimage on foot.**
